Yielding Show Notes

NOTE: These are the notes I used to prepare this podcast but unlike the other notes, these are not a transcript and are temporary, enjoy this take while it’s here.

Do you take this person to be your wedded spouse, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part, according to God’s holy ordinance and thereto I pledge myself to you.

Marriage is a commitment to another, a yielding your individual to the partnership.

  • Commit to care for each other
  • Maintain self-care so each is healthy and confident in unity
  • Help each other
  • Encourage each other
  • Honor each other
  • Use your gifts, talents, and strengths to mutual benefit
  • Depend on each other
  • Communicate with each other
  • Have sex with each other and only each other – as other exclusiveness

It’s all in the vows. A commitment made in words to be lived in action. To have and to hold both physically and emotionally, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health, to love and to cherish till death do us part.

We talked about love in liberty from 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7. Love is

  • Patient
  • Kind
  • does not envy
  • does not boast
  • is not proud
  • not rude
  • not self-seeking
  • not easily angered
  • keeps no record of wrong
  • does not delight in evil
  • rejoices with truth
  • protects
  • always trusts
  • always hopes
  • always preservers
  • never fails

Marriage Before Self

Forsaking all others meaning yielding even your own desires to the benefit of both. The marriage comes first. Willingly giving yourself to the other no matter what. Committing to be there for the other, supporting them in their needs and to make that person come first, before others.

Undoubtedly, we know this involves yielding. When a parent is ill or needs to move from independent living to supported care husbands and wives need to agree on what their role is, where the hard limits are or if there is a limit. Subsequently, together they move to fulfill it even when it’s overwhelmingly messy. Working together but yielding as the other has need, always keeping their unity at center.

What Begins With Y? Yielding.

What begins with Y? Yield. Today we complete the series on what it means to live BRIGHTLY as a city on a hill. Individuals, each committed to God and interdependently serving each other. First your foundation, unseen by the world representing your intimate personal relationship with God. The foundation of b for belief, r for rest, I for identity, and g for gifts. Each personal and unique to you, for you from God. The strong foundation you build your life on.

Subsequently, the walls of your building represent your interpersonal interactions with others. First to those close to you and outward in ripples of light radiating from who God created you to be. The walls include h for honor, t for tribe, l for liberty, and finally y for yield. Where you once yielded to your parents and the family culture of your youth, now you willingly yield to God.

Today we will unpack and reveal what it means to live a life yielding to God. Thanks for joining me.

Yielding to God

Yielding to God starts right where we began, with believing. What do you believe? Everyone must come to the point where they either reject what the Bible says as nonsense thereby making me and everyone who believes it a fool. Or accept it as true and believe. What do you have to lose? Fear and anxiety. What do you have to gain? Peace that passes all understanding in the most nerve wracking situation you can imagine.

Everyone’s experience is different. Some call out to God from a desperate situation, facing imminent death such as sickness or war. Others seek God while facing overwhelming pressure from losing their job or bankruptcy. Still, others have an emptiness and sense of isolation that allows them to cry out, are you there, reveal Yourself to me. Yet, many, even most, have a unction to want to know more. Someone, or many someone’s, mention God stirring a curiosity to seek information. A co-worker offers to pray for them and they consider their church growing up for the first time in years. Still others have never been inside a church but seeking for hope, clarity for life, hunger to know something about these Christian people, seemingly randomly decide to get up on Sunday or attend a special event at a church near home or work. This individualized process is between you and God through the work of the Holy Spirit.

God sent Jesus

At some point when through this gently pulling of the Holy Spirit curiosity leads to truth from the Word. In the Romans 10:9-10 it says ‘If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart you believe resulting in righteousness and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation’. Then reiterated in verse 13 ‘whoever calls on the name of Jesus will be saved.

What does it mean confess Jesus is Lord? Jesus, the Son of God who was born from the virgin Mary, lived and performed many miracles acts of great mercy, and was condemned to death for crimes and sins He did not commit. Romans 6 says the wages, payment, for sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ. At His death Jesus was judged for all of your sin so when you believe and yield to Him you are exonerated because two people cannot be guilty of the same crime.

To make Him Lord, is to yield the authority and control of your life to Him. To accept His death as payment for your sins. We call this a substitution where Jesus takes your sin and you receive His righteousness.

Yield to Jesus

Have you ever done that? Have you confessed with your mouth Jesus is Lord and committed your life to Him and His care? Do you believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead?

If you have that is great! If you have not that is okay. All you need do is believe and receive. If you believe and want to receive this forgiveness Jesus offers simply talk to God, pray, the following out loud so your ears can hear your voice.

Heavenly Father thank You for making a way to me through Jesus. Jesus, I confess You are my savior. I believe in my heart God raised You from the dead. I believe Your Word. I need and accept Your salvation now. Thank You for saving me!

Passover

The Easter story is linked to Passover. Jesus and His disciples gathered in the upper room to share Passover Seder or structured meal. Consequently, Judas left to report Jesus to the Jews leading to His arrest, trial, and crucifixion. Additionally, Jesus told Peter he would deny knowing Jesus three times. These events are important but what is the significance of Passover for Jews?

Pentecost means fiftieth, and represents the 7 weeks (7*7=49) it took for the Israelites to reach Mount Sinai and Moses to receive the Law or Torah; the first five books of the Bible, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, numbers, Deuteronomy. Additionally, it is the Feast of Harvest or First Fruits.

Consequently, Shavuot (Passover) is a pilgrimage festival where all are expected to come before God in Jerusalem with an offering of the first fruits. This is a free-will offering, not compulsory and it is very joyous with dancing with the offering. Furthermore, it has many description such as the ‘birthday of Torah (Bible),’ ‘counting of the bridegroom Israel with the bride Torah,’ day Israel became a constitutional body’.

Correlating Jesus with Passover is very easy considering the final plague on Egypt, the death of the firstborn. The salvation of those who believe and trust in God by the shedding of blood in payment and covering the believers by the blood ransom. Subsequently, the liberty to worship God in truth of His Word and deeds.

Jesus appears after resurrection and promises Holy Spirit

Following His resurrection, Jesus appeared to many people, including the women at the tomb, and the disciples in the upper room as documented in John 20 and at the sea of Galilee in John 21. This continued for forty days. Similarly, Moses spent forty days on Mount Sinai receiving the Law. At the end of the Passover meal Jesus told them He was leaving but the Helper would come.

John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you. (NASB20)

John 16:7 ‘I tell you it is to your advantage that I go away; for f I do not go away the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.’ (NASB20)

Acts 1:3-5 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over forty days and speaking of things regarding the kingdom of God. Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, ‘Which you heard of from Me’. For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. (NASB20)

When they asked about restoring the kingdom Jesus responded, ‘It’s not for you to know the days and times they Father sets those but ‘you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and the world.’

Acts 1:9 and after He said these things, He was lifted up while they were watching, and a cloud took Him up, out of their sight. (NASB20)

Jesus sent Holy Spirit

Meanwhile, following Jesus’ ascension the apostles waiting in Jerusalem take care of housekeeping and appoint Matthias to replace Judas thereby maintaining the number of apostles at twelve. Then the day of Pentecost arrives and the Bible in Acts 2 indicates they were all together in one place. It’s a festival of food and thanksgiving so they are eating and joyful. They were anticipating the arrival of the Holy Spirit and knowing Pentecost as the day of receiving the Law from God, it would be a perfect day to receive to also receive the Holy Spirit and usher in the New Covenant.

Acts 2:1-4 when the day of Pentecost had come they were all together in one place. And suddenly a noise like a violent rushing wind come from heaven and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And tongues like fire appeared to them, distributing themselves and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with different tongues as the Spirit was giving them to speak out. (NASB)
